Haplogroup P-P295

What is Paternal Haplogroup P-P295?

Haplogroup P-P295, also known as Haplogroup K-M9 (Y Chromosome Consortium long-form label), is a genealogical group of lineages defined by unique genetic markers present on the Y-chromosome. Your paternal haplogroup, or that of your father if you do not have a Y-chromosome, paints a picture of your ancient origins and the migrations of your ancestors. Although your paternal haplogroup reflects just one of your many ancestral lineages, it carries information about that lineage over tens of thousands of years.

Haplogroup P-P295 is descended from haplogroup K-M9. Among 23andMe research participants, haplogroup P-P295 is commonly found among populations in the Philippines and China.

It's important to note that your haplogroup doesn't define your current ethnic identity; rather, it provides an insight into your deep ancestry on the paternal side.

Haplogroup P-P295 is linked to men in Timor

If you have haplogroup P, you share a paternal-line ancestor with men in Timor, an eastern Indonesian island that connects mainland Asia with the Pacific islands. Because of its location between mainland Asia and the Pacific islands, Timor was used as a stepping-stone during the early migration of humans from Asia to New Guinea and Australia nearly 50,000 years ago. When farming spread around the world between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago, Timor experienced major changes in tools, technology, commerce, and subsistence strategies. In contrast to surrounding populations, a matrilocal social system persists in Timor. While nearby populations typically practice patrilocal social systems, in which men live their whole lives on their birth land and women move to their husband's land, Timor exhibits the opposite system. This system is shown most clearly in the Wehali kingdom of Central Timor. Wehali is a matrilocal area and considered to be "female land," in which houses and other property belong to women.
