Haplogroup Q-M120

What is Paternal Haplogroup Q-M120?

Haplogroup Q-M120 is a group of Y-chromosome lineages defined by unique genetic markers. Your paternal haplogroup, or that of your father if you do not have a Y-chromosome, sheds light on the migrations of your ancestors. Although your paternal haplogroup reflects just one of your many ancestral lineages, it carries information about that lineage over tens of thousands of years.

Haplogroup Q-M120 is descended from haplogroup Q-F746. Among 23andMe research participants, haplogroup Q-M120 is commonly found among populations in China and Vietnam.

It's important to note that your haplogroup doesn't define your current ethnic identity; rather, it provides an insight into your deep ancestry on the paternal side.

Haplogroup Q-M120 is linked to the Han Chinese

Haplogroup Q-M120 has been found in many populations of the Han Chinese ethnic group. The ancestors of the Han, called the Huaxia, lived in the upriver basin of the Yellow River 5,000-6,000 years ago, and grew during the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties. As agricultural technology improved, the Huaxia spread east and south, and became the Han Chinese. Over the last 2,000 years, there have been three major migrations of the Han southward. The first of these migrations occurred during the Jin Dynasty from 317 to 420 CE, when nearly one million people moved south. A second migration occurred during the Tang Dynasty, after the An-Shi Rebellion, between 755 and 762 CE. The last migration occurred during the Southern Song Dynasty, from 1127 to 1297 CE, when nearly 5 million people migrated southward.
