1. English: habitational name from Nailstone in Leicestershire. The placename is derived from the Old English personal name Nægl + tūn ‘farmstead, settlement’. 2. Americanized form of Dutch Nijsing, which is perhaps an altered form of Nijsen, from Nisin, a pet form of Nijs, short for Denijs (see Denis). History: Families with the English surname Nason have lived in Warwickshire since the mid-14th century. By c.1638 a Richard Nason had migrated from there to Kittery, ME. In the same century other family members acquired property in Cork, Ireland. Some of their descendants went to North America c.1800.
