The meaning of Flory

1. English and French: variant of Fleury and, in North America, (also) an altered form of this. 2. French: from a medieval vernacular form of the Latin personal name Florius, a derivative of Florus, which is from florus ‘blooming, flowering’. 3. South German (in Austria mainly Flöry): from a short form of the personal name Florian. In part, this is a Germanized form of French Fleury (compare 1 above). History: Joseph J. (1683–1741) and Mary Fleury and six children (including four sons) arrived in Philadelphia, PA, from the Palatinate, Germany in 1733 and settled in Lancaster County. Two sons are the progenitors of the PA and MD Florys. One son moved to VA; his descendants changed their name to Flora.
