1. Americanized form of Polish Zaborowski. 2. Americanized form of Polish Zabrzyski, a topographic name for someone who lived ‘beyond the birch trees’ (from za ‘beyond’ + brzezie ‘birch trees’), or Zabrzeski, a habitational name from a place called Zabrzeg, named with za ‘beyond’ + brzeg ‘bank’). The surname Zabrzyski is very rare in Poland. History: Albrecht Zaborowski or, in German, Saborowski (1638–1711) arrived in New Amsterdam in New Netherland (now New York City, NY) from Poland (then Prussia) on board the Dutch ship De Vos in 1662. His name was Americanized to Albert Zabriskie. He settled in NJ. Zabriskie Point in Death Valley is named after one of his descendants, a businessman Christian Brevoort Zabriskie (1864–1936).
