The meaning of Wallington

English (southern): habitational name from Wallington (Hertfordshire). The placename derives from an Old English personal name Wændel + Old English connective -ing- or the groupname suffix -ingas (genitive -inga-) + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’. There is no medieval evidence to suggest that either Wallington in Norfolk or Wallington in Northumberland gave rise to a surname. Wallington in Beddington (Surrey) is also an unlikely source.
