The meaning of Tydings
1. Irish: adopted as an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Tuaruis(c), an altered form of Ó hUarghuis ‘descendant of Uarghus’, a personal name meaning ‘cold choice’ but misunderstood as containing t(h)uaruisc ‘news’ and translated into English as ‘tidings’. Ó hUarghuis has also been mistranslated as Waters and Caldwell, being wrongly taken as Ó Fuaruisce ‘son of cold water’. This name is very rare in Ireland. 2. English: probably from Middle English tiding, singular or plural, ‘(good) news, information’. This surname is very rare in Britain.
