History: This surname was brought to North America from the part of Germany which was ceded to Belgium in 1920. It is no longer found in Germany or in (the German-speaking part of) Belgium. The first American bearer was Hubert Turbes from Herresbach (now in Belgium), who married Anna Grosjean in Manderfeld (now in Belgium, too) in 1840, died in New Ulm, MN, in 1857.
