Americanized form of German Schwing and possibly also of Zwing, from Middle High German zwinc ‘legal district’, hence possibly a metonymic occupational name for a district administrator. History: Many of the bearers of the surname Swing are descendants of Johann Martin (Jean-Martin) Schwing, a Huguenot from Alsace, France (see Schwing).
