Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian Štangelj: nickname for a tall, thin man, at least in part of Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) origin (see 1 above and Stangl), but possibly also derived from štanga ‘pole, shaft’ (a loanword from German).
