Based on the Decennial U.S. Census, the surname Sportsman has seen a slight decrease in popularity between 2000 and 2010. In 2000, it was ranked 38,395 in terms of prevalence, but by 2010, it had dropped to 39,555—a decrease of just over 3%. Despite this drop in ranking, the actual count of people with the Sportsman surname increased slightly from 542 in 2000 to 556 in 2010, a growth of 2.58%. However, when considering the proportion per 100,000 people, there was a decrease of 5% over this period. The ethnic identity associated with the surname Sportsman also saw shifts between 2000 and 2010, according to the Decennial U.S. Census data.
