Americanized form of Flemish Suy. History: The progenitor of the Sooys was Joost (Yoost) Sooy from the Netherlands, who came to North America c.1705. He first settled in NY and later moved to NJ. He died in 1737 and his tombstone still stands at Lower Bank, Burlington, NJ.
