The meaning of Sickels
Possibly an altered (genitivized) form of Austrian German Sickl, a cognate of German Sickel, or, alternatively, of Dutch Sikkel (see Sickel 4). Compare Sickles. History: The Americans surnamed Sickels and Sickles trace their origin to Zacharias Sickels Van Weenen, who came to New Netherland (now NY) in 1655 as a corporal in the service of the Dutch West India Company. He was presumably born in Vienna, Austria, but it is not clear whether he was of Austrian or Dutch origin. In Fort Orange (now Albany, NY) his surname was recorded as Syckelse.
