English: 1. variant (especially in Essex) of Sheldrick, perhaps influenced by the personal name Shadrach (see 2 below). 2. apparently in some rare and late instances (especially in Wales) a vernacular form of the Old Testament personal name Shadrach, the name of one of the ‘three holy children’, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were cast into a fiery furnace and not harmed (Daniel 1–3). Shadrach derives from a Chaldean Shudur Aku ‘command of the moon god’.
