Jewish (from North Africa): variant of Sabbagh ‘dyer’. History: The businessman Solomon Sebbagh or Sebag, a member of a wealthy Sephardic Jewish family from Meknes in Morocco, came to London in 1799 to manage the family’s business interests. His son Joseph changed his surname to Sebag-Montefiore in 1885, when he inherited to estate of his uncle Sir Moses Montefiore.
