English (Leicestershire): 1. metronymic from the Middle English personal name Sare (modern English Sarah, see Sara) + -son. 2. nickname from Middle English Sarasin, Sarason (Old English Saracene, reinforced by Old French Sarrazin) ‘Saracen, heathen’, perhaps given to someone who resembled a Turk or an Arab in appearance or whose behavior was thought unchristian, or to one who had been on crusade and wore a Saracen’s head as a badge or heraldic device. Compare French Sarrazin. History: Richard Sarson (born 1607), tailor, came from London to MA in 1635. He and his son (also called Richard) settled in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard before 1656.
