The meaning of Romenesko

Americanized form of Swiss Italian Romanesco (or of its Dutch altered form Romanesko): from the adjective romanesco ‘Roman’, most likely applied in the sense ‘Romansh’, denoting a speaker of the Romance language spoken predominantly in the Swiss canton of Grisons (Graubünden). History: It was Stefano Innocente Romanesco from Pollegio in the Swiss canton of Ticino, who moved to the Netherlands toward the end of the 18th century and established a family there, and it was his son Joseph Romanesco, who emigrated with his wife and children to the US (they settled in WI) in the middle of the 19th century. Joseph Romanesco’s surname was changed to Romenesko in the US. The surname Romanesco did not survive in Switzerland, while in the Netherlands it is today most common in the form Romonesco.
