In both cases the second element is halh ‘nook of land’; the first element of the place in Norfolk, recorded in Domesday Book as Riuessala, is uncertain; that of the Wiltshire place is believed to be an Old English personal name, Rust. 2. Altered form of German Rischel (see Rishel).
