The meaning of Repine
1. Probably an altered form of French Rapine, a variant of Rapin, or of Rabine. 2. In some cases possibly also an Americanized form, under French influence, of Russian Repin, derived from a nickname based on repa ‘turnip’, or a shortened and altered form of Polish Repinski. History: The progenitor of the majority of the American Repines was Nicholas Rapine (or Rabine), a weaver reportedly of French descent, who came to Philadelphia, PA, in 1735 from Scotland. Among many of his descendants (one of them, Daniel Rapine, was the second mayor of Washington, DC) the surname was altered to Repine.
