The meaning of Quibell
English (northwest Nottinghamshire and south Yorkshire): nickname, probably from Middle English whit(e) ‘white’ + belt ‘belt, girdle, sash’, presumably for someone who was distinguished by his wearing of a white sash. The change of Whitbelt to Quibell (perhaps in the 15th or 16th century) would be through northern dialectal over-aspiration of Wh-, i.e. /hw/, as Qu-, i.e. /kw/, and loss of /t/ in the consonant clusters /bt/ and /lt/. History: The surname Whit(e)belt originated in the 13th century in the hamlet of Walton in Sandal Magna (south Yorkshire), a mile or so from Crofton, where Quibell is recorded in the 17th century. The spelling Quibell is first attested in East Markham (Nottinghamshire) in the middle of the 16th century. DNA testing has shown that the Nottinghamshire and south Yorkshire families are related and derive from the same, single ancestor.
