Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 強, a word meaning ‘powerful, strong’: (i) from Qiang Chu (強鉏), the name of an official in the state of Zheng (located in part of present-day Shaanxi and Henan provinces) during the Spring and Autumn period (770–476 BC). His descendants inherited 強, part of his name, as their surname. (ii) in some families, this surname is traced back to the ancient ethnic group, Di, located in northwestern China.
