The meaning of Poje

1. Slovenian and Croatian: probably from a German (Gottscheerish; see 2 below) shortened and altered form of the Tyrolean ethnic name Payr ‘Bavarian’, either applied as a nickname referring to Gottscheers or imported as a surname. Alternatively, perhaps a nickname for a cattle drover or a herder derived from Slovenian pojati ‘to hurry, to chase’ in the sense ‘to take cattle to pasture’. Compare Poye. 2. German: shortened and altered form of Tyrolean Payr ‘Bavarian’ (compare Payer). This is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname, originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola, Slovenia (see Kocevar), and may alternatively be of Slovenian origin (see 1 above). 3. German: variant of Boje, itself a variant of Boye. Some characteristic forenames: German Herta, Hertha.
