The meaning of Pogson
English (Yorkshire): patronymic formed with Middle English son, meaning ‘son of (someone surnamed) Pogg’. The origin of Pogg is uncertain. It might be a Middle English antecedent of early Modern English Pog, a rhyming pet form of Mogg, a pet form of Margaret. Alternatively it could be a topographic surname from Yorkshire dialect pog ‘spongy ground, bog’. History: George Redmonds, A Dictionary of Yorkshire Surnames (2015), suggests that Adam Pogge, recorded in 1316 in Emley (Yorkshire), was a forebear of Thomas Pogson of Emley, recorded there in 1377.
