The meaning of Outman
Possibly an altered form of North German Uthmann (see Uthman) or Utmann, or of their Dutch cognate Uitman, which is a nickname from Middle Dutch uteman ‘stranger, newcomer’. Alternatively, an altered form of Dutch Oudman, a cognate of German Altmann. Compare Oatman. History: Johannes Outman, reportedly of Dutch origin, born 1654 in Hamburg, Germany, married Femmetje Kock c.1683 in the Netherlands, from where they arrived in NY in 1687. He died 1716 in NY. His descendants also bear the surname Oatman.
