American: from the name of the city of Olean in Cattaraugus County, NY. It was randomly chosen as a replacement for the Italian surname Agoglia. History: The progenitor of the Oleans was Rocco Agoglia who came to RI in 1900 from Italy. He reportedly changed the surname to Olean after a teacher of his children had suggested to do so, and it was the teacher who picked the new surname for them from a map.
