Japanese: 1. written 越智 ‘exceeding wisdom’ with characters used phonetically. It is found mostly on the islands of Shikoku and Okinawa. A family of daimyō (feudal lords), descended from the Matsudaira family, took the name from a village in Yamato (now Nara prefecture). 2. (Ōchi): written 大内 ‘large house’. It can also be pronounced Ōuchi (see Ouchi).
