All of the placenames derive from Middle English nether ‘lower’ + cot ‘cottage’ (Old English neothera, cot), except Nethercote in Lewknor, Oxfordshire, which derives from Middle English other ‘other’ (Old English ōther) + cot, with the N- due to misdivision of Middle English atten other.
