Altered form of French (Seine-Maritime) Mius: nickname from regional French mius ‘better’. History: Bearers of the surname Muise are in most cases descendants of Philippe Mius, sieur d’Entremont, from Normandy in France, who came to Acadia with his family in 1651. In 1653 he was awarded the Barony of Pobomcoup in Acadia, where he founded the village of Pubnico, the oldest village in NS (Canada) still occupied by the Acadians, many of whom are descendants of the founder. His descendants also bear the surname Dentremont.
