The meaning of Mifflin

English (Staffordshire and Herefordshire): 1. from the Old French personal name Meifelin, itself from an ancient Germanic name composed of magin- ‘power’ + an uncertain second element. 2. nickname from Old French mate + felun ‘kill the felon’. History: John Mifflin (born 1640) came to Delaware from Warminster, Wiltshire, England, in the 1670s. He is probably the same person as the John Mifflin, a Quaker, who built his home, ‘Fountain Green’, in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia, in 1679. His fourth-generation descendant Thomas Mifflin (1744–1800) was a member of the Continental Congress, a revolutionary soldier, and governor of PA.
