History: The progenitor of the Maugans family was reportedly Matthias Maugans from Baden-Württemberg, Germany, whose presumed son Conrad was born c.1735 in Frederick County, MD. Maugansville in Washington County, MD, is named after two of Conrad’s sons, who settled there with their families in 1828, while six of Conrad’s children moved in the 1790s to OH, where some of them changed their surname to Morgan. The name Maugans was reportedly also recorded as Mangin(s) and Mangan(s) on certain occasions.
