Czech (Masařík); Slovak (also Masárik): diminutive of Czech Masař, Slovak Masár ‘butcher’ (see Masar). History: Tomáš Masaryk (1850–1937) was the first president of the Czechoslovak Republic (1918–35). His son Jan Masaryk (1886–1948) was foreign minister (1941–8), who disappeared in mysterious circumstances at the time of the Communist takeover.
