The meaning of Levalley

1. Altered form (part-mistranslation into English) of French Levallée or its Channel Islands variant Levallee, variants of French (Normandy, especially Manche and Orne) Levallet: topographic name for someone who lived in a small valley, a variant of Vallet, with fused masculine definite article le; or a habitational name from Le Vallet, the name of several places mainly in the northern part of France. The surname Levallée is very rare in France, while the surname Levallee is no longer found in the Channel Islands. 2. Altered form of Levally. History: The majority of the American bearers of the surname Levalley trace their origin to Peter or Pierre LeValley, reportedly from the Channel Islands, who was in Marblehead, MA, by 1718 and later settled in Warwick, RI. The second largest group of the Levalleys belong to the unrelated LeVally family (see 2 above). Some of the rest of the Levalleys are descended from Daniel LeValley, born in Alderney, Channel Islands, who settled in QC in 1828.
