The meaning of Leppo

Altered form of Finnish Leppä or Leppänen (see Leppanen), and possibly also of some other name containing the word leppä ‘alder tree’. The surname Leppo is also found in Finland, but it is very rare there. During the name-changing campaigns of the early 20th century it was adopted to replace the Swedish cognate Ahlgren.
