The meaning of Lefor
German (originally from Alsace or Lorraine, later also found in Hungary): altered form of French Lefort. History: Most American Lefors are concentrated in ND and originate from Banat, a region that was formerly part of Hungary (now divided between Romania, Serbia, and Hungary). Their common ancestor was Johann Lefor, a German speaker from Alsace or Lorraine who, in the first half of the 19th century, settled in Ernsthausen, a German settlement of Danube Swabians, which is now part of Serbia under the name Banatski Despotovac. In 1893 some of his descendants (Adam Lefor with his wife and eight children) emigrated to ND, where the town of Lefor bears their surname.
