Americanized form of German Lehl or Loehl. In either case, the name is a variant of Lehle or Löhle, pet forms of the personal name Leonhard. History: The Loehl family came to North America in 1737. Another branch of the family came to North America from Germany via Russia. They settled in southern Russia in the mid-18th century, but kept their German identity. Both branches have adopted the Americanized form Lail as a surname.
