The meaning of Lagrone

Americanized form of German (Baden-Württemberg and Hesse) Legron, itself of French origin, either as a variant (mainly Yonne), with fused masculine definite article le, of Gron 3, or as a German altered form of French (Nord) Lecron, a variant of Cron 4. The surname Legron is very rare in Germany. In the US, it is also common among African Americans. Compare Lagroon and Legrone. History: The majority of the Lagrones trace their origin to (Adam) Lawrence (or Laurence, in German Lorentz, Laurentz) LeCrown or LaGron(e) from Schönau in the northwestern part of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, who in 1752 came with his wife and children aboard the Upton to Charleston, SC, and settled in Newberry, SC. Later the name Lagrone spread mainly to TX. The progenitor is listed in the register of Huguenot ancestors recognized by the Huguenot Society of America (as Adam Lorenz La Grone). The Lagrone family and its branches are apparently related to the Leckron family and its branches, which originate from the same place in Germany.
