Austrian German; Czech (Křen): from the Austrian German word, of Slavic origin, Kren or Czech křen ‘horseradish’, presumably an occupational name for a dealer in vegetables or spices and condiments, or perhaps a nickname for someone with a sharp tongue. This is also a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname, originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola, Slovenia (see Kocevar and compare Slovenian name in 2 below). 2. Slovenian: altered form of Hren ‘horseradish’, under German influence. In part, it is of Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) origin (see above). 3. Jewish (from Belarus): unexplained.
