Greek and German: from the Greek personal name Kosmas, a derivative of kosmos ‘order, arrangement, (ordered) universe’, also ‘ornament’. It was borne by an early Christian saint martyred in Cilicia in 303 AD under the emperor Domitian, together with his brother Damian (see Damian); they came to be widely revered as patron saints of doctors.
