French and Channel Islands (Jersey): nickname from a diminutive derivative of Old French jenvre ‘youngest child’ or, alternatively, of Old French janvier ‘January’, probably denoting someone born in that month. History: A bearer of the surname Janvrin from the Poitou region of France is documented in Quebec City, QC, in 1680, but his line has apparently died out. Another North American ancestor, Jean Janvrin, came from the isle of Jersey. He married Elizabeth Knight in Dover, NH, in 1706. The Janvrin family of Jersey had been involved with the transatlantic trade for several generations.
