The meaning of Ingman

1. English (Flintshire and Denbighshire): from the Old Norse personal name Ingimund, itself from the heroic name-element seen in such names as Ingle + mundr ‘bride-price’. The current main distribution, in Northeast Wales and Chester, is coincidentally close to the Wirral where Ingimund the Viking invaded in 902. 2. Swedish: habitational name, formed with man ‘man’, for someone from any of several places whose name begins with Ing- (e.g. Ingvalsby in the province of Uusimaa, Swedish Nyland, in Finland, which consists of the personal name Ingivald and by ‘farm, village’). This surname is also found in Finland. 3. Americanized form of German Ingmann: perhaps a variant of Engmann (see Engman). Some characteristic forenames: Scandinavian Lars.
