Americanized form of German Heibst: unexplained. The surname Heibst has apparently died out in Germany, but it is still found in Alsace, France. Compare Hipes. History: It was Johann Nicholas Heibst from Bingen in Germany whose descendants bear the surnames Hypes and Hipes. He came to North America c.1750 and died in Botetourt County, VA, in 1802.
