The meaning of Hoosier

1. Altered form of English Hosier. 2. Americanized form of German Hauser or of its altered form Hooser 1. History: Hoosier is the demonym for a resident of the US state of Indiana, in general use by the 1840s, following the publication of the poem The Hoosier’s Nest by John Finley in 1833. There are several theories about the origin of the demonym, including a possibility that it may have originated from the surname Hoosier (of German origin; see 2 above), but none is generally accepted.
