Bosniak (Hodžić): patronymic from Bosnian hodža ‘khoja’, a title for an Islamic religious teacher or a priest, and also for a scribe or a clerk in the Ottoman Empire, itself of Turkish and ultimately of Persian origin (see Khawaja, compare Khoja). Hodžić is the most frequent surname in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
