English (Buckinghamshire and Middlesex): habitational name from Hoddesdon (Hertfordshire), from an Old English personal name Hodd (genitive Hoddes) + dūn ‘hill’. The surname was probably confused with Hudson. History: The earliest known bearer of this name is Norman de Hoddesdon, recorded in 1165–6. The surname was taken to America by Nicholas Hodsdon c.1628, from whom probably all current US bearers of the name are descended.
