The placenames all derive from Old English ēast ‘east’ + cot ‘cottage’. 3. in northwestern England, a variant of Hesketh. History: Stephen Hasket, a soap boiler and merchant of Salem, MA, was a native of Henstridge, Somerset, England. He came to Salem from Exeter, Devon, c.1666. His son Elias, born at Salem, went on to become governor of New Providence, Bahamas, before the people there revolted and sent him back to NY.
