The meaning of Hamp

1. English: apparently a habitational name from Hamp in Bridgwater (Somerset). Sometimes perhaps a variant of the very common southern English topographic word ham ‘hemmed-in land, riverside meadow’ (see Hamm) or a placename deriving from it, of which earlier forms in Hamp are sometimes recorded, such as Ham in Gillingham (Dorset) recorded as Hampe in 1461. The name may also derive from Middle English henep ‘hemp’, a much cultivated plant in the Middle Ages. 2. German: variant of Hampe.
