The meaning of Hache

1. French (mainly northern; Haché): probably a variant of Aché (influenced by the name in 2 below), which is from the ancient Germanic personal name Achari composed of the elements ac ‘blade’ and hari ‘army’. In North America, however, the name Haché may have been an altered form of French Larché (see Larche 2). Compare Achey, Ashey, and Hachey. 2. In some cases possibly also French (mainly northern) and Walloon: from Old French hache ‘axe, battleaxe’, hence a metonymic occupational name for someone who made or used axes or battleaxes. 3. German: variant of Hach 1. 4. Hispanic (mainly Dominican Republic): probably of French origin (see above). History: It was a French Canadian, Michel Haché dit Gallant, born c.1662 in QC probably to Pierre Larcher or Larché from France (see Larche), whose surname is believed to have been altered from Larché to Haché. However, his descendants mostly bear other altered forms of this surname, including those mentioned in 1 above, and his secondary surname or dit (‘also called’) name Gallant. Michel Haché married Anne Cormier in 1690, with whom he had twelve children, including seven sons. They were the first Acadian family permanently settled on Île St-Jean (present-day Prince Edward Island). Some characteristic forenames: French Alphonse, Amedee, Euclide, Josee, Laurent, Lucien, Yvon. German Gerhard, Friedrich Wilhelm, Hans Diedrich. Spanish Altagracia, Jorge, Mario, Pedro.
