Americanized form of any of various like-sounding Jewish (Ashkenazic) surnames. History: The American movie producer Samuel Goldwyn (1879–1974) was born in Warsaw to Polish Jewish parents under the name Szmuel Gelbfisz. In 1898 he emigrated to England and changed his name to Samuel Goldfish. In 1916, already living in the US, he changed his name again, this time to Goldwyn, the name composed of the first part of his previous surname and the second part of the surname of his business partners, the brothers Edgar and Archibald Selwyn.
