The meaning of Gassett
Altered form of French Gachet, reflecting the Canadian and American French practice of sounding the final -t. This surname is also found among African Americans. History: The majority of the Gassetts trace their origin to Henri Gachet, a French Huguenot from La Rochelle who arrived in MA with his brother, David (see Gushee), toward the end of the 17th century. He married Sarah Hoskins in 1697 in MA. Henri Gachet is listed in the (US) National Huguenot Society’s register of qualified Huguenot ancestors (also as Henry Gashet) and also in the similar register of the Huguenot Society of America.
