Possibly a shortening of edelen baas ‘noble boss, lord’, hence a nickname for someone who behaved as a nobleman. History: Josua and Anthoni Elenbaas from the province of Zeeland settled in 1847 in Zeeland Michigan (Els Elenbaas: Mijn naam is Elenbaas, 1983).
